Washington State Legislature to Introduce “Large Capacity” Magazine and Open Carry Bans

From NSSF

Over the past few legislative cycles in Washington State, the firearm industry has been successful in narrowly stopping multiple efforts by the legislature to ban “large capacity magazines” and modern sporting rifles (MSRs) or what is being termed as “assault rifles.”

It appears 2021 will be more of the same in the Evergreen State. NSSF’s Government Relations – State Affairs team learned SB 5078 has been prefilled. If enacted, SB 5078 would make it a criminal offense to manufacture, possess, distribute, import, sell, purchase or transfer a magazine with a capacity greater than 10 rounds.

Additionally, SB 5038 was introduced and while mostly focused on banning an individual’s right to open carry, it also contains a troubling provision for retailers. It gives municipalities some authority to use zoning ordinances for the purposes of limiting the lawful commerce and location of firearm retailers.

NSSF®’s Government Relations – State Affairs team is committed to defeating all egregious bills this session and will provide updates on the situation as the session unfolds. As we get more information in the coming days, we’ll follow up this alert with ways you can help us defeat this anti-industry bill. In the interim:

Please contact your legislator and tell them to vote no on SB 5078! You can find your legislator by clicking here.

The legislature convenes Monday. This year will present additional challenges after the 2020 election and due to COVID-19. Washington plans to conduct the 2021 session mostly remotely and in other states, we’ve seen testimony on our side limited.

New Guns & Gear for 2021—Primary Arms Optics GLx 2.5-10 FFP Scope with ACSS Griffin MIL Reticle

New Guns & Gear for 2021—Primary Arms Optics GLx 2.5-10 FFP Scope with ACSS Griffin MIL Reticle

From Primary Arms Optics

Primary Arms Optics has announced the release of a new reticle configuration for the GLx 2.5-10x44mm FFP Rifle Scope (MPN: 610143). The ACSS® Griffin™ MIL reticle brings the advanced ranging tools and innovative horseshoe design of traditional ACSS reticles to a MIL-grid system. Even with the new ACSS Griffin MIL reticle, this scope maintains its favorable price at $649.99.

The GLx 2.5-10×44 is built to enhance both agility and accuracy of mid-range precision rifles. GLx scopes bring premium technology and materials to an approachable price range, and this scope is no exception. The fully multi-coated, low-dispersion glass provides exceptional light transmission for a clearer sight picture downrange, while the lightweight body and 2.5x minimum magnification improve handling speeds in close quarters. In addition, the large eyebox and daylight bright illumination assist in rapid target acquisition, allowing the user to take full advantage of their ACSS reticle system. As with other GLx scopes, GLx 2.5-10x44mm FFP Rifle Scopes come with enhanced locking turrets with return to zero, AutoLive™ motion sensing reticle illumination, and our hardened steel-on-steel adjustment system.

Here’s my complete list of the best new guns and gear for 2021.

The ACSS Griffin MIL reticle is an advanced MIL-grid reticle that integrates ranging and acquisition tools from Primary Arms’ patented ACSS reticle system. This includes both vertical and horizontal ranging brackets, as well as a bold outer horseshoe for fast acquisition on low magnification. While the MIL grid can be used for most holdovers, users can also leverage the scope’s turrets and chevron aiming point for exact precision at longer distances. “The ACSS Griffin MIL is a pro’s reticle, providing CQB (Close Quarter Battle), mid-range UKD (unknown distances) and exact mil/mil firing solutions hold overs in one system,” says Dimitri Mikroulis, inventor of the ACSS reticle system.

New Guns & Gear for 2021—Safariland 015 Open Top Competition Holster

New Guns & Gear for 2021—Safariland 015 Open Top Competition Holster

From Safariland

Safariland®, a brand of The Safariland Group, a leading global provider of safety products designed for the public safety, military, professional and outdoor markets, today announced the new Model 015 Open Top Competition Holster. Available for most steel and polymer frame pistols, the 015 provides a minimalistic, intelligent design for custom-fit and easy modification options for competitive shooters in open, limited and 3-gun divisions.

“This is a very well-made competition holster,” said Bobby McGee, Vice President of Engineering for The Safariland Group duty gear division and Team Safariland member. “Machined from billet, a raw block of virgin aluminum, the 015 has superior stabilization and little resistance for a secure fast draw. Paired with a stainless-steel ball joint on the holster, it allows for lots of clamping force securing fine-tuned positioning throughout the life of the holster, unlike aluminum ball joints that can cause positioning to skip with adjustments.”

Here’s my complete list of the best new guns and gear for 2021.

The Model 015 incorporates an instinctive rotating lock for secure retention without the use of a nose piece and the advanced design significantly reduces the chance of unintended release during draw. By rotating the lever towards the rear of the firearm, the trigger block is unlocked providing a fast and efficient draw during the natural gripping motion.

Ideal for Open and Limited divisions where the most minimal design is desired, the ball joint system allows freedom of movement and easily accommodates thumb rests, red dot sights and additional modifications to limit interference. For 3-Gun competitors or others looking for even more stability when moving around objects, Safariland offers a supplemental muzzle adaptor for additional support and protection that is fully adjustable for barrels from 4″ to 7.5″.

The 015 features a special safety detent for retention even when the screw is removed and a stainless-steel spring allows for worry-free disassembly. Further, the holster and belt loop can be separated for ease of travel, while maintaining the user’s set position. The holster is designed to be used with 1.5” and 1.75” width competition belts with the use of a preinstalled belt shim. The belt loop works for a variety of belts and tightens to ensure no movement between the belt and belt loop. Additionally, the adjustable cant and round thigh-pad offer added comfort.

The Model 015 Open Top Competition Holster comes in black, red, or blue and is available for most 2011 steel and polymer frame pistols. MSRP is $223. For competitors who want additional muzzle support, they can purchase the 015A Muzzle Adaptor as an optional accessory. MSRP is $100.00. To purchase the 015 with the Muzzle Adaptor attached, order Model 015XL, MSRP $323.00.

Gun sales set record in 2020

Gun sales set record in 2020
Photo by Guy J. Sagi, Copyright 2021

From Small Arms Analytics & Forecasting

Small Arms Analytics & Forecasting (SAAF) estimates total gun sales for 2020 came in at roughly 23 million. December 2020 U.S. firearms unit sales were 2.1 million units, a year-over-year increase of 24% from December 2019, and about half of the November year-over-year increase.

SAAF’s firearms unit sales estimates are based on raw data taken from the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), adjusted for checks unlikely to be related to end-user firearms sales. For example, the FBI’s raw numbers (for December, some 3,904,879) cannot be taken at face value as large numbers of background checks are unrelated to end-user sales. As a case in point, in December the state of Illinois conducted about 830,000 so-called permit checks and rechecks alone whereas end-user unit sales at firearms retailers likely amounted to about 54,000. SAAF makes certain other adjustments to the data based on retailer reports and other information; nonetheless, the estimates still likely understate the true number of sales.

SAAF Chief Economist Jurgen Brauer comments that “while December 2020 continued the year’s record-breaking pace – summing to almost 23 million units – December’s 24% year-over-year increase was by far the smallest such monthly increase since March 2020.”
