Washington State Legislature to Introduce Large Capacity Magazine and Open Carry Bans

From NSSF

Over the past few legislative cycles in Washington State, the firearm industry has been successful in narrowly stopping multiple efforts by the legislature to ban “large capacity magazines” and modern sporting rifles (MSRs) or what is being termed as “assault rifles.”

It appears 2021 will be more of the same in the Evergreen State. NSSF’s Government Relations – State Affairs team learned SB 5078 has been prefilled. If enacted, SB 5078 would make it a criminal offense to manufacture, possess, distribute, import, sell, purchase or transfer a magazine with a capacity greater than 10 rounds.

Additionally, SB 5038 was introduced and while mostly focused on banning an individual’s right to open carry, it also contains a troubling provision for retailers. It gives municipalities some authority to use zoning ordinances for the purposes of limiting the lawful commerce and location of firearm retailers.

NSSF®’s Government Relations – State Affairs team is committed to defeating all egregious bills this session and will provide updates on the situation as the session unfolds. As we get more information in the coming days, we’ll follow up this alert with ways you can help us defeat this anti-industry bill. In the interim:

Please contact your legislator and tell them to vote no on SB 5078! You can find your legislator by clicking here.

The legislature convenes Monday. This year will present additional challenges after the 2020 election and due to COVID-19. Washington plans to conduct the 2021 session mostly remotely and in other states, we’ve seen testimony on our side limited.

SAF—Biden’s Tweet an Attack on Gun Owners

From SAF

Joe Biden’s Twitter message to former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords may read like a threat against one gun rights organization, but it is really an attack on every gun owner in the nation, the Second Amendment Foundation said today.

Biden pledged to work with Giffords on her extremist gun control agenda, and promised to “defeat the NRA,” in the process, but SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb said that’s just cover for a bigger goal.

“Joe Biden has labored relentlessly for decades to reduce the Second Amendment to rubble,” Gottlieb stated. “He may attack one group by name, but his goal is to crush the rights of every gun owner in our country.

“By attacking the Second Amendment Rights of 100 million Americans,” Gottlieb continued, “Biden is not bringing us together but dividing us further. If people take to the streets in protest, if violence occurs it will be his fault and he should be impeached for violating our constitutional rights and inciting violence. Maybe it is time to ban him from Twitter and Facebook!”

This week SAF is launching its new major advertising effort to recruit tens of thousands of gun owners into the 2nd Amendment First Responder program. SAF is running a one-minute message 40 times this week, on several national networks, to educate millions of law-abiding gun owners about the gun rights battle. This message will appear on DirecTV, Fox News, Fox Business, CNN, MSNBC, The Weather Channel, One America News Network, CNBC, HLN, Bloomberg and Dish TV.

This hard-hitting ad urges gun owners and viewers concerned about the civil right to bear arms to join the fight by texting ‘PROTECT 2A’ to ‘474747’. By texting, people can support SAF’s educational and legal action programs to protect their rights.

“Joe Biden isn’t fooling anybody,” Gottlieb observed. “He spent 47 years on Capitol Hill trying to turn the right to keep and bear arms into a regulated privilege. Now that he’s headed to the White House, he thinks he will be able to complete his mission. We’re working to swell the ranks of our 2nd Amendment First Responder project to stop him.”

“We didn’t start the fire, Biden did,” he said.

The Second Amendment Foundation (www.saf.org) is the nation’s oldest and largest tax-exempt education, research, publishing and legal action group focusing on the Constitutional right and heritage to privately own and possess firearms. Founded in 1974, The Foundation has grown to more than 650,000 members and supporters and conducts many programs designed to better inform the public about the consequences of gun control.

Ohio Knife Law Reform Bill Signed into Law

Ohio Knife Law Reform Bill Signed into Law

From Knife Rights

Knife Rights’ Ohio Knife Law Reform Bill, SB 140, was signed today by Governor Mike DeWine. We sincerely thank Gov. DeWine for signing this important bill. Thanks, also, to all of you who used Knife Rights Legislative Action Center for the hundreds of emails and calls to the governor.

NOTE: The new law does not take effect until April 10, 2021, 90 days after signing. Existing law is still in effect until then.

NOTE: We have not yet passed Knife Rights signature knife law preemption in Ohio, so individual cities and towns may still have knife ordinances more restrictive than state law. Knife Rights’ LegalBlade™ Knife Law App will be updated when the new law goes into effect. LegalBlade™ App includes laws in a number of Ohio cities as well as provides links to find municipal codes of many Ohio cities and towns.

SB 140 reforms Ohio knife law by making two separate substantive changes: 1. The ban on manufacture and sale of “switchblade,” “spring blade” and “gravity” knives is repealed; 2. It clears up the vague and confusing Ohio law regarding carry of ANY knife by defining a knife, razor or cutting instrument as a “deadly weapon” or “weapon” ONLY if it is used as a weapon. This would allow carrying any knife concealed under state law. Knife Rights was honored to work closely with a number of Ohio legislators over the past six years to get this bill introduced and passed. Former Senator Joe Uecker, SB 140’s original sponsor, said, “When Knife Rights approached me about this bill, it made perfect sense to me. A completely legal item to possess should be completely legal to manufacture in Ohio. A knife should not be considered a deadly weapon unless it’s used as one. That’s just common sense.” Uecker continued: “After four years of effort, it is clear that we’d never have gotten this done but for the simple fact that Knife Rights showed up, every time! As anyone successful in getting legislation done knows, being there, in the Capitol, at critical moments, is what makes the difference. Todd Rathner from Knife Rights did that. I sincerely appreciate that he and Knife Rights showed up every single time we needed him at each critical juncture.” Uecker concluded, “I would also like to thank my fellow legislators who kept this bill moving and especially Chairman Lang for getting SB 140 to the House floor.” Representative George Lang, Chairman of the Ohio House Criminal Justice Committee, said, “SB140 is just good policy. It is good for Ohio businesses and will create jobs and it is good for Ohio citizens. Decriminalizing simple possession of a knife is much needed criminal justice reform. I was proud to work with Todd from Knife Rights. He was here every step of the way, there’s no substitute for that.” Co-Sponsor Senator Kristina Roegner, said, “Manufacturing jobs are the lifeblood of Ohio. The fact that you cannot legally manufacture an otherwise legal product in Ohio makes no sense. This is why I co-sponsored SB140; it’s just good policy for Ohio. I’d like to thank Knife Rights for their support and hard work on SB140.” Rick Hinderer of Hinderer Knives, said, “I was fully prepared to take our manufacturing of automatic knives to a neighboring state. Then Knife Rights stepped up to fix the law here in Ohio. I worked closely with Todd Rathner from Knife Rights and saw him in action in the Capitol. He easily worked with members from both sides of the aisle. There is no question that without his efforts at the Capitol SB140 would never have been passed. Decriminalizing knife carry was frosting on the cake that I was proud to help make happen. By showing up and doing the hard work, Todd and Knife Rights got the job done for us and all Ohioans.” Representative Scott Wiggam, Rick Hinderer’s Representative, said, “When I was approached by a constituent who wanted to manufacture automatic knives under contract to the U.S. Government and he told me he couldn’t because of an outdated Ohio statute, I knew we had to fix it. SB140 is the right policy for Ohio and Ohioans. Thanks to Knife Rights and Todd Rathner for being here in the Capitol to make it happen.” Knife Rights would also like to thank Ohio Second Amendment activist Jim Irvine for his support and assistance in getting SB 140 passed and signed. We also appreciate the support we received from American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio and Buckeye Firearms Association. Knife Rights is America’s grassroots knife owners’ organization; leading the fight to Rewrite Knife Law in America™ and forging a Sharper Future for all Americans™. Knife Rights efforts have resulted in 33 bills enacted repealing knife bans in 23 states and over 100 cities and towns since 2010.

Mossberg 940 JM Pro Competition Shotgun Wins NRA Golden Bullseye Award

From Mossberg

Mossberg’s newest autoloader, the 940 JM Pro competition shotgun, has been recognized as the 2021 Shooting Illustrated Shotgun of the Year, presented by the National Rifle Association (NRA) Publications. Now in their 19th year, the NRA Publications Golden Bullseye Awards acknowledge the finest products available in the shooting sports and this year’s winners will be honored during the 2021 NRA Annual Meetings and Exhibits in Houston, Texas.

Golden Bullseye Award winners are selected by a seven-member committee of editors, graphic designers and veteran members of the NRA publications staff, representing more than a century of collective experience in the shooting and hunting industry. To qualify for consideration, a product must have been recently introduced and available to consumers; used or tested by a staff member or regular contributor to the magazine; reliable, innovative and meeting or exceeding the evaluator’s expectation. Completing the criteria for award selection are the perceived value of the product to the purchaser and that the product is styled in a manner befitting the shooting and hunting industry, and its enthusiasts.

The result of two years of development alongside world champion shooters, Jerry and Lena Miculek, the Mossberg 940 JM Pro was designed with the needs of today’s competitive shooter in mind. At the core of this competition-ready 12 gauge is a durable gas system that will run for many rounds before cleaning and reliably cycle 2 ¾ or 3-inch shells. Key features include an enlarged loading port to allow quad loads into the magazine tube; redesigned elevator and shell catch to eliminate common pinch-points; slim profile forend and user-configurable stock for length-of-pull, drop and cast; HIVIZ® fiber optic sight system; and extended Briley® choke tubes.

“The 940 JM Pro competition shotgun is the culmination of the hands-on experience of world-class shooters, Jerry and Lena, along with the engineering and manufacturing expertise of the Mossberg team,” commented John MacLellan, Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “We knew that we had a winner with the 940 but to be recognized with a Golden Bullseye Award for the best new shotgun is a great honor.”

Ed Brown 1911 Magazine Exchange Program

From Ed Brown

Let’s face it: It doesn’t matter how terrific your 1911 handgun, nor how fancy your defensive ammo, if your magazine won’t feed. Trusting your life to a substandard magazine is like trying to drive the Indy 500 on four spare tires. That why Ed Brown has started a Magazine exchange program.

This exciting program gives 1911 fans the opportunity to try out the last 1911 magazine they’ll ever own—a 100% made-in-America magazine of $22-$30 value—by sending in the old, busted 1911 mags they got from “the other guy” plus $10-$15, depending on which Ed Brown 1911 magazine they’ve selected.

The process is simple: Just visit https://www.edbrown.com/magexchange/and print out the exchange form. On it, you can choose between Ed Brown’s traditional stainless steel magazines ($10) and their Black Nitride version ($15). Be sure to select one of several cool special offers available. Your next step is to visit your drawer full of dented, dirty 1911 magazines and pick the ones you like the least, then mail them to Ed Brown Products along with the form. Then simply sit back, and wait to be dazzled by Ed Brown’s lifetime-warrantied best-in-class magazine technology.

What do we mean by “best-in-class”? We mean 100% made-in-America magazines, with only top-quality materials, construction, and design. Ed Brown 1911 magazines feature a patented follower design made from heat-treated steel (not cheap plastic), with an extended front skirt, and an anti-friction finish. This ensures proper feeding and full engagement of the slide stop on the last round. The maximum tensile strength heavy-duty spring provides a longer lasting spring life, with the proper up-force to ensure reliable feeding and slide stop operation. Furthermore, Ed Brown’s 3-in-1 configuration allows you to choose the best bumper pad solution to fit your needs.

“Building custom handguns for over 50 years has taught us what it takes to make a quality magazine,” says Ed Brown Marketing Director John May. “With a patented steel follower, industry leading spring, and a stainless no-fail tube design, we’re confident our magazines will last you a lifetime and keep your 1911 running optimally.”

Primary Arms Optics GLx 2x Prism Wins Best CQB Optic Award

Primary Arms Optics GLx 2x Prism Wins Best CQB Optic Award

From Primary Arms Optics

Primary Arms Optics’ GLx 2x Prism has been awarded the ‘Best CQB Optic’ award for Ballistic’s Best 2020 Editors’ Selects Awards. These awards recognize outstanding performers in various product categories within the firearms community, including handguns, rifles, optics, and more. Ballistic’s Best Editors’ Selects Awards focus on products that go above and beyond the competition, winning out in key performance features for their selected category. For the CQB optics category, the GLx 2x Prism won the editors’ trust for its combination of form factor, innovation, and reliability.

Released earlier in 2020, the Primary Arms Optics GLx 2x Prism bridges the gap between reflex sights and conventional prism optics. The GLx 2x Prism is part of Primary Arms’ GLx optic series, which brings premium technology and materials into an approachable price range. “The GLx 2x Prism is unique in that it rivals optics popularized by the military, but affordable for the civilian market,” says Terry Mears, Primary Arms Optics’ Director of Product Marketing. “We’re proud to see its strengths recognized in this year’s Editors’ Selects Awards.”

Weighing in at only 11oz, the GLx 2x Prism is comparable to many full-size red dot and holographic weapon sights, though the ultra-clear 2x magnification and etched ACSS ballistic-compensating reticle provide additional precision at further distances. The daylight-bright illumination with Primary Arms Optics’ patented AutoLive™ motion-sensing on/off technology grants the user enhanced performance in any environment or lighting condition, while conserving runtime for an extended 20,000-hour battery-life. Since this is a magnified optic with an adjustable diopter, it’s well-suited for marksmen with astigmatism, which can greatly impair the visibility of other traditional reflex sights.

“The Editors’ Selects winners are based on a lot of actual hands-on testing by the editors and dozens of our expert content creators,” Athlon Outdoors Editorial Director Nino Bosaz said. “The folks at Primary Arms have steadily sent us affordable optics that work great and come out on top during torture testing, but the Primary Arms GLx 2X Prism reigns supreme. We also shot many optics at the Athlon Outdoors Rendezvous in 2020, and the GLx 2X Prism was a true standout among a sea of red-dots.”
