SAUER Introduces Ultralight S101 Highland XTC Carbon-Fiber Rifle

From J.P. Sauer & Sohn

J.P. Sauer & Sohn, Germany’s oldest manufacturer of hunting firearms, is pleased to introduce the ultralight S101 Highland XTC carbon-fiber rifle.  Weighing just 5.4 lbs. in the .308 Win version, this highly accurate bolt-action rifle is ideal for strenuous hunts when every ounce counts.

The S101 features a hand-laid, carbon-fiber stock with advanced recoil absorbing properties.  The barrel is fluted and threaded for additional weight reduction and cold-hammer forged for guaranteed precision of less than one MOA at 100 yards.  The barrel and receiver also feature Sauer’s Diamond-Like-Carbon (DLC) surface for maximum corrosion protection.

“The DLC layer is 40 times thinner than a human hair while offering key advantages such as superior surface hardness and maximum rust protection and wear resistance,” said Jason Evans, CEO, Blaser Group.  “Many advances were made in the production of the Highland XTC, and it now holds the record as Sauer’s lightest rifle ever.”

Additional features include superb balance, a crisp match-grade trigger, fluted bolt, and Sauer’s Dura Safe direct firing pin safety which operates as an ergonomic slide on the bolt shroud for enhanced safety and optimum operation.  The Highland XTC consistently delivers precision and accuracy even under the most extreme climate conditions.

The Sauer S101 Highland XTC carbon-fiber rifle is available in all current calibers in the S101 series and, depending on the caliber, in barrel lengths from 20-inches to 22-inches.

MSRP: $3,000

Federal Ammunition Introduces New Prairie Storm 16- and 28-Gauge Upland Hunting Loads

From Federal Premium

New 16- and 28-gauge Federal Premium Prairie Storm FLITESTOPPER (FS) Lead loads use the updated FLITECONTROL FLEX wad and a mixed payload of standard pellets with FS lead to produce full, consistent patterns from these smaller payloads. The improved wad design can be used through both ported and standard chokes for better patterning and versatility. Shipments of this product have begun to arrive at dealers.

“Our all-new 28- and 16-gauge offerings use the full-length FLITECONTROL FLEX wad, which was introduced with the launch of Federal Premium’s redesigned Black Cloud waterfowl shotshells and HEAVYWEIGHT TSS turkey loads. The wad’s unique design improves pattern density and consistency when fired through ported and non-ported chokes,” said Dan Compton, Federal Shotshell Product Manager. “FLITESTOPPER pellets feature a raised cutting ridge encircling the exterior gives the pellets an unparalleled ability to slice through feathers and flesh, with no loss of penetration or adverse effect on ballistics and flight characteristics. This cutting action creates significantly larger wound channels.”

These enhanced design elements deliver holes in the bird, not the pattern. Testing done at the Federal Factory in Anoka, MN shows a No. 4 load puts more than 75 percent of its pattern in a 30-inch circle at 40 yards with a modified choke.

Features

  • New options for sub-gauge shotguns, specifically 16- and 28-gauge
  • FLITECONTROL FLEX wad can be used through all upland chokes
  • Payload mix of 70 percent standard copper-plated lead and 30 percent FS Lead
  • FS lead produces even edge-to-edge patterns and creates large wound channels
  • Time-tested, ultra-effective powder and a reliable primer.
  • Supports Pheasants Forever through on-box royalty program

Federal has supported Pheasants Forever since 1998. That on-going support includes an on-box ammunition royalty program. For every box of Prairie Storm purchased, which sports the Pheasants Forever or Quail Forever logo, Federal donates a portion of the proceeds to the organization’s habitat and education programs. So far, Federal has sold more than 55 million of these special shotshells to support these important organizations.

Federal ammunition can be found at dealers nationwide or purchased online direct from Federal. For more information on all products from Federal or to shop online, visit www.federalpremium.com.

Guns Vanish from Remington.com

Owners of relatively new Remington brand firearms will no longer find the photos, tips, information and specifications for their guns on Remington.com. Vista Outdoor purchased the ammunition brands during the Remington Outdoor Company bankruptcy proceedings and the website is now exclusively dedicated to the cartridges, shotshells and components it now owns. The products, however, are still being produced out of the same Lonoke, AR, plant as they were under previous management.

Remington, which was part of Remington Outdoor Company along with DPMS, Bushmaster, Barnes Bullets, Marlin and other legends, was America’s oldest gunmaker. Roundhill Group has purchased what remained of the famed manufacturer and is working to re-open the legendary factory in Ilion, NY, seen above nearly 100 years ago.

Shooting Looters Would be Allowed with Proposed Florida Law

Legislation drafted by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis would expand the state’s “Stand Your Ground” law by including a tightly worded definition for looting in its list of forcible felonies, according to a report from the Miami Herald. A burglary within 500 feet of an interruption or impairment of business is the language the reporter allegedly read prior to its release.

Criminal penalties would also increase for those convicted of violence during a disorderly assembly. Blocking traffic during a protest would become a third-degree felony.

Civil unrest that gripped the nation, particularly in Portland, has resulted in some businesses abandoning downtown metropolitan areas. In Chicago, questionable tactics by city officials funneled the violence into the suburbs on at least one occasion.

Criticism for the allegedly forthcoming proposal from Gov. DeSantis was swift. Visit the newspaper’s website for full details.

I’ll keep you updated, but in the meantime, here are some tips to survive if urban unrest comes to visit you.

.350 Legend Loads from Hornady

The .350 Legend is growing quickly in popularity and famed manufacturer Hornady has a pair of loads currently available. One is tailored for hunting under the company’s American Whitetail line and the other turns things up a notch in its renowned Custom category.

For hunters the company offers its American Whitetail cartridge with a 170-grain InterLock bullet. It leaves the muzzle at 2,200 fps and generates 1,827 ft.-lbs. of energy there.

With a 200-yard zero drop at 300 yards is 19.4 inches, where the bullet is traveling 1,271 fps carrying 609 ft.-lbs. of knockdown power. You can expect to hold under the target by 4.5 inches at 100 yards.

Here’s a look at the SAAMI specs for the .350 Legend and an FAQ on the cartridge, which was introduced in 2019.

Hornady has a new load in its Custom line with a 165-grain FTX bullet. It leaves the barrel at the same velocity, but thanks to the improved ballistic coefficient, drop at 300 yards (also with a 200-yard zero) is 17.6 inches. Energy at that distance is also improved, 689 ft.-lbs.

The lighter-weight bullet, however, leaves the muzzle with less energy. There is measures 1,773 ft.-lbs.

Hornady isn’t the only company producing the cartridge. Browning rolled out options at the 2020 SHOT Show as did Federal in its Fusion line.

New 350 Legend Items Available Now From Browning Ammunition

From Browning

In 2019, a new “Legend” was born: 350 Legend, a caliber that proudly claims to wield more power than the famous .30-30 and less recoil than a .243 Winchester. Better still, it is available at a surprisingly low price and is compliant for hunting in states that only allow straight-walled centerfire cartridges. But that’s not all. This caliber is also uniquely suited for use across multiple firearm platforms.

Many hunters and recreational shooters alike were immediately excited by the potential of this newcomer. After its first year on the market, it is clearly living up to its Legend namesake, and consumers are fervently jumping on the bandwagon.

Not one to be left behind, Browning® Ammunition is proud to announce that their 350 Legend offerings are now available. The year 2020 brings two new options to 350 Legend fans with the introduction of an FMJ and BXR Deer load. Unique in the marketplace, this FMJ weighs in at only 124 grains and will be the fastest straight-walled cartridge in the world at a blazing muzzle velocity of 2500 fps (when fired from a 20-inch barrel).

Here are more loads that Browning introduced at the January 2020 SHOT Show.

The newly developed 350 Legend BXR Deer bullet is a 155-grain rapid expansion design that maximizes energy transfer on impact for quick and effective terminal performance.

“Browning is all about innovation and superior engineering,” said Ben Frank, Browning Ammunition brand manager. “This new caliber’s list of superlatives represents a rare achievement in a crowded ammunition space, and it’s something that we want to be a part of and add our own spin on.”

SAAMI has also published complete specs for the .350 Legend.

Aker Leather 147C Nightguard Compact for Weapons with Tactical Lights

From Aker Leather

With many officers and civilians adding tactical lights to their pistols, it is imperative to have a holster that can properly accommodate weapon/light combinations. In addition to the Nightguard series for full size weapons and tactical lights, Aker now offers the 147C Nightguard Compact for compact weapons with smaller lights such as the Streamlight TLR7 and TLR8.

Produced in the USA using high quality full grain US cowhides, the 147C holster is slim and features a thumb break for quick access. It also features a polymer reinforcement on the front of the holster opening, which is designed to reduce wear from frequent drawing and re-holstering with the light attached. Law enforcement departments around the nation including Customs & Border Protection provide the Aker 147C Nightguard Compact to their officers.

I interviewed several custom holster experts, and you may be surprised at how affordable they are.

Available in black or tan for right or left-handed shooters, the 147C fits compact and subcompact weapons such as the Glock 19, 26, and 43X, the M&P Shield, and the Sig Sauer P320C and P365. SAR9 X Platinum 9mm

From SAR USA

SAR USA by Sarsilmaz, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of firearms is pleased to announce introduction of the new SAR 9X Platinum striker-fired semi-automatic 9x19mm pistol.

“The SAR 9X Platinum’s DNA comes directly from the SAR 9 pistol which is one of the latest offerings from SAR USA,” said Todd Pearson, COO of SAR USA. “The SAR 9 was originally designed and engineered to compete on the world stage as a military sidearm, and to fill a military contract. Now we are offering the SAR 9 in the X Platinum package which includes Cerakote finished slide, paddle holster, double mag pouch, magazine loader and accessory flashlight. All are packaged in a handsome carrying case”.

SAR USA also recently teamed with the Personal Defense Network. Here are details.

The SAR 9X Platinum striker-fired pistol features a lightweight polymer frame with accessory rail, serrated slide with Cerakoteâ platinum finish and a 4.5″ hammer-forged barrel with recessed crown for increased accuracy. With a 3-dot sight optic-ready mount plus choice of three insertable back straps to personalize the fit, the 9X Platinum points naturally and is a pleasure to shoot. Its low barrel axis-to-grip ratio lessens muzzle climb, and the 20-degree grip angle provides superior control and fast second shot recovery… the accuracy is built in. Couple these features with an ambidextrous safety trigger that is smoother than a double-action revolver and the SAR 9X becomes the perfect carry-pistol when you want a round in the chamber.

The SAR 9X Platinum incorporates a unique safety trigger that features a tab safety in the center to prevent inertial discharges should the gun be dropped onto the rear of its slide. There is also a bright-red insert at the top that is visible from the side when the trigger is in the forward position. Labeled a “striker status indicator”, this enables the shooter to see, at a glance, whether the gun is cocked or not, even from a distance as long as the side of the trigger is visible. The SAR 9X Platinum comes standard with one 17rd. and one 19rd. magazine. For capacity restricted states 2-10rd mags.

I interviewed the experts, and here’s what they had to say when asked how long polymer handguns will last.

Technical Specifications:
