Gray Hair Outnumbers Guns in Polling Places

Gray Hair Outnumbers Guns in Polling Places

Amnesty International issued a press release on Oct. 6 urging states to ban possession of firearms at polling places. The organization’s claim that their prevalence intimidates minatory voters made headlines, but the Election Administration and Voting Survey presented to Congress—covering the 2018 election—and an August National Conference of State Legislatures report cloud the claim. Their numbers clearly indicate most polling places already ban gun possession and most of today’s youth don’t volunteer time to the democratic process. As a result, gray hair outnumbers guns in polling places.

Guns in Polls

“In many other states, concealed and open carry laws may restrict or allow the presence of firearms in certain locations that happen to be polling places, but not by virtue of their being polling places alone,”  the National Conference of State Legislature report explains. “For example, states may prohibit firearms in public schools, which are often designated as polling places thereby prohibiting firearms at those specific polling sites.” Regulations also vary by region if voting is taking place in a church.

In addition, “Eleven states—Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas—the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico explicitly prohibit guns and other weapons in polling places.”

Gray Hair in Polls

The report to Congress breaks down the number of election-day volunteers, nationwide, by age. “Jurisdictions also reported the ages of their poll workers,” it states. “Figure 4 shows that less than one-fifth of poll workers were younger than 41 years old, whereas more than two-thirds were 61 years or older.” The cited chart, figure 4, shows that only 4.1 percent of volunteers were between the ages of 18 and 25.

And there’s a shortage of volunteers. “Forty-five states reported a total of 637,713 poll workers assisting at polling places during Election Day for the 2018 general election,” it explains. “However, staffing polling places continues to be a significant challenge for most local election officials. Of the jurisdictions that provided feedback about efforts to obtain a sufficient number of poll workers for the November 2018 general election, more than two-thirds reported it was ‘very difficult’ or ‘somewhat difficult.’ Only 15.3 percent of jurisdictions reported having a ‘somewhat easy’ or ‘very easy’ experience recruiting poll workers.”

Work and school schedules—along with laws already in place—undoubtedly contribute to the reality that gray hair outnumbers guns in polling places. Recent riots destructive enough to drive business from Portland may, however, indicate that today’s angry youth does have enough discretionary time to invest in democracy, if they choose to do so.

SB Tactical Stands with Q

From SB Tactical SB Tactical, in conjunction with the Firearms Regulatory Accountability Coalition, Inc., (FRAC), and the National Rifle Association, stands in solidarity with Q, LLC. and is disappointed by the recent ATF actions in classifying their Honey Badger™ pistol as a short-barreled rifle. This classification is based on a seemingly arbitrary set of criteria and promises to create unnecessary confusion and anxiety amongst millions of legal gun owners and the industry as a whole. The ATF is saying, in part, that they will not evaluate an accessory as a stand-alone product, but that the characteristics of the entire firearm influence their decision. Sierra Bullets, L.L.C., the Bulletsmiths, a dedicated manufacturer of one of the highest-quality, most accurate bullets in the world, has acquired certain assets relating to the Barnes Bullets brand of specialty hunting bullets.

Founded in 1932 and headquartered in the Rocky Mountains just outside of Mona, Utah, since 1967, Barnes is an industry leader in manufacturing environmentally sound, lead-free bullets. Known for its superior quality, terminal performance and accuracy, Barnes enjoys an almost cult like following among western big game hunters, shooters, and handloaders.

“We are super excited and honored for the opportunity to be working with the Barnes Brand. Our strategy is to be the leader in specialty premium bullets and ammunition, and Barnes adds an additional uniquely positioned “Super Fan” brand to the Sierra portfolio,” said Keith Enlow, President of Sierra Bullets. “We want to let the industry and Barnes’ consumers know we are devoted to ensuring the quality of Barnes products, and understand the importance of continuity. We are committed to Barnes’ wonderful employees and the people of Mona, Utah where the brand is based and will continue to operate.”

Industry leading ammunition products such as the VOR-TX and TAC-XPD will continue to be a primary focus for the brand, in addition to further developing and innovating Barnes’ award-winning line of component hunting and target bullets.

“Barnes is the innovator and leader in lead-free, copper bullets — providing unmatched terminal performance, accuracy and dependability for hunters, shooters, and heroes on the frontlines protecting our nation” Enlow continued. “Our plan is to invest in and grow the Barnes brand as the category leader in premium bullets and ammunition, right here in the great state of Utah.”

Here’s the original statement from Clarus, parent company of Sierra, after the acquisition.

Hottest Selling Guns in September

Hottest Selling Guns in September

Photo, Copyright Guy J. Sagi 2016

More guns have been purchased so far in 2020 than ever before, and last month alone—when compared to September of 2019—new gun sales were up 66 percent. What were the hottest selling guns in September?

GunBroker.com has issued its list for September and there are some surprises. The highest demand is for home- and self-defense firearms right now, so let’s start with those categories.

In semi-automatic handguns it’s the Glock G19 that led the way. The numbers make it obvious people know the 9 mm is a good choice for stopping a felonious attack. The Ruger57 took second place, followed by the SIG Sauer P365.

When it comes to staying safe at the house, knowledgeable gun owners recognize the versatility of the AR-15 platform and the Anderson Manufacturing AM-15 version took top honors in the semi-automatic rifle category. It was followed by the Smith & Wesson M&P Sport II, another AR-15, and that perennial favorite for plinking and outdoor fun, the Ruger 10/22 took third place in sales among those retailers using the services of GunBroker.com.

If you prefer greeting criminals breaking down your door with a shotgun, the IWI TS12 was the top-selling semi-automatic shotgun. Second place was claimed by the Benelli M4—a version of the one being used by some branches of the U.S. military—and the new Howa Boss-25 took third.

Pump-actions have an undeniably life-saving reliability about them, and CZ-USA’s CZ 612 was the hottest selling among those models in September. It was followed by a pair of Mossbergs, the shorty 590 Shockwave and longtime enthusiast favorite model 500.

Wheelgun fans took home more Colt Pythons than any other revolver. The Heritage Arms .22 LR-chambered Rough Rider and the Taurus 856 trailed slightly.

In the other categories, the Ruger American Rifle took first place among bolt-action rifles, Marlin 1895 won the lever-action category and the Connecticut Valley Arms Scout dominated single shots. The Rossi Tuffy, Mossberg Silver Reserve II and CZ-USA Hammer Coach took first place in single-shot, over-under and side-by-side shotguns.

Bear in mind, this list of hottest selling guns in September is based on the report from a single source and likely doesn’t accurately reflect demand in your area. With the holiday shopping rush set to begin next month, now’s a good time to visit and order from your favorite FFL if you’re looking for something specific. Waiting much longer increases the odds that the make and model you’re looking for as a gift is going to be hard to find—especially when firearms are selling at a record-setting pace.

Beretta Celebrates Its 494th Anniversary

Beretta Celebrates Its 494th Anniversary

From Beretta

This past Saturday, October 3rd, Beretta celebrated its 494th anniversary as a firearms manufacturer, which makes Beretta the manufacturing company with the longest history of continuous operations in the world. Beretta products have accompanied sportsmen and women all around the globe on countless hunting excursions, performed flawlessly in five decades of the Olympic Games, and been combat tested as the official sidearm of the U.S. Armed Forces for over 35 years.

In 1526, Mastro Bartolomeo Beretta (1490-1565/68) of Gardone Val Trompia, Brescia, Italy, received 296 ducats as payment for 185 arquebus barrels sold to the Arsenal of Venice. Although there is a history of Beretta products’ production in the 1500s, this particular moment in our history is the first documented sale of Beretta products in the known world, and it is the foundational point from which our company began its commanding presence in the firearms manufacturing industry.

Over the years, the Beretta family and name has become synonymous with uncompromising quality, design, materials, construction, and performance for their myriad of firearm products. With the fourteenth and fifteenth generations of the Beretta family now in charge of the various Beretta companies, their leadership benefits from centuries of experience passed down from father to son as they constantly innovate to meet the demands of a global market in the 21st century. With continuous investments in technology, people, and growing product lines, the Beretta family remains committed to the core value of quality without compromise established almost five centuries ago. It is this premise that continues to be the unchanging key to Beretta’s success in serving customers worldwide.

“Beretta has been continuously reinventing itself for nearly 500 years, and that is how, generation after generation, we create the market-changing products,” Francesco Valente, General Manager and COO of Beretta USA, said. “We are a stable company, focusing on the long-term and we think in terms of decades, not quarters – that is why we can invest so much in research and development and invest in environmental conservation to preserve the future of our planet. From our founding through today, we have kept a relentless commitment to innovation. The company’s birthday is an excellent opportunity to remind ourselves and our customers that we will always strive to innovate what’s next.”

2020 Sets Gun Sales Record

2020 Sets Gun Sales Record

Story and Chart From Small Arms Analytics & Forecasting

Small Arms Analytics & Forecasting (SAAF) estimates September 2020 U.S. firearms unit sales at 1.8 million units, a year-over-year increase of 66% from September 2019. Likely single handgun sales (0.98 million) increased year-over-year by 81% whereas single long-gun sales (0.66 million) increased year-over-year by 51%. All other likely background check-related sales (0.13 million) increased year-over-year by 50%. This includes so-called “multiple” sales where the exact split between handguns and long-guns cannot be determined from the data record.

SAAF’s firearms unit sales estimates are based on raw data taken from the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), adjusted for checks unlikely to be related to end-user firearms sales. For example, the FBI’s raw numbers (for September, some 2,857,953) cannot be taken at face value as large numbers of background checks are unrelated to end-user sales. As a case in point, in September the state of Illinois conducted about 378,000 so-called permit checks and rechecks alone whereas end-user unit sales at firearms retailers likely amounted to about 49,000. SAAF makes certain other adjustments to the data based on retailer reports and other information; nonetheless, the estimates still likely understate the true number of sales.

SAAF Chief Economist Jurgen Brauer comments that “the 2020 year-to-date sales (January to September) now stand at 16.7 million and thereby exceed the previous annual high (January to December) set in 2016 with 16.6 million units sold. That said, the August and September in 2020 increases are the lowest since March 2020. Handgun sales continue to comfortably outpace long-gun sales.”
